Bloemfontein-based Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Marumo Gallants can breathe a huge sigh of relief after being hit with a hefty fine for fielding an ineligible player during the 2024/25 season – rather than facing points deductions or expulsion.

The saga stems from a complaint by Cape Town City FC, who raised concerns about the improper registration of Gallants midfielder Monde Mphambaniso. The complaint was part of a last-ditch effort by City to be reinstated into the PSL after finishing bottom of the log and subsequently being relegated following the promotion-relegation playoffs.

Initially, the case was referred back to the PSL Disciplinary Committee (DC) after a SAFA arbitration ruled in Cape Town City’s favour. There was a possibility that Gallants could be docked points for each of the 26 matches in which Mphambaniso featured – either as a starter or a substitute – during the season.

Such a punishment, handed down just days before the new season kicks off, could have severely jeopardised the club’s PSL status and participation in the league.

However, on Thursday, Gallants pleaded guilty before the DC and were fined R200,000 – half payable immediately, and the remaining R100,000 suspended for 24 months, provided the offence is not repeated during that time.

PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed the ruling. “I can confirm that a short while ago, the PSL DC finalised a disciplinary matter in which I had referred charges of misconduct against Marumo Gallants Football Club and their player, Mr. Monde Mphambaniso,” said Majavu.

“This case stemmed from the registration of Mr. Mphambaniso, which was processed by Marumo Gallants without the required clearance certificate, as per the league’s regulations. Considering the circumstances and background, Gallants pleaded guilty and were accordingly convicted.”

On the matter of sanctions, Majavu said after hearing arguments in mitigation and aggravation – and taking into account the broader context, including previous disciplinary and arbitration proceedings – the DC ruled as follows:

  1. Marumo Gallants were fined R200,000.
  2. R100,000 is payable immediately. The remaining R100,000 is suspended for 24 months, on the condition that they are not found guilty of the same offence during this period.
  3. If a repeat offence occurs, the suspended fine will be enforced immediately, in addition to any further sanctions.
  4. Gallants must cover the costs of the DC proceedings, which will be calculated and communicated to the club.

“As for the player, Mr. Mphambaniso was found not guilty and therefore no sanction was imposed on him. This matter is now considered closed – unless an aggrieved party exercises its right to appeal. If that happens, we will address it accordingly.”

It remains to be seen whether Cape Town City FC will exercise its right to appeal.

Marumo Gallants are scheduled to begin their 2025/26 campaign on 9 August with an away fixture against Richards Bay FC at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.
