The CAF Champions League holders dominated for much of the 90 minutes and eventually lifted the cup thanks to goals by Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners. Pirates started strongly and almost scored within the first few minutes of the game.

They came close yet again within the first ten minutes of the game, but Yanela Mbuthuma’s shot went wide of the mark. The Brazilians were more successful just past the 10-minute mark when Teboho Mokoena was in the perfect position following a free-kick. The ball found the back of the net, and Miguel Cardoso’s men were off. They almost scored a second goal ten minutes before the break, but were denied by the Buccaneers’ Sipho Chaine.

Pirates seemed rattled going into the second half, but were awarded a penalty just before the hour-mark following a scramble inside the Sundowns box as Mokoena was penalised for a pull on Yanela Mbuthuma. Gamphani Lungu stepped up to the spot, but Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams pulled off a magnificent save toward his left.

Pirates tried again to level the score in the 77th minute with a powerful side-footed shot by Simphiwe Masilela, but Williams kept the ball out.

Sundowns were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time after the referee spotted a trip inside the box. Iqraam Rayners easily found the back of the net, and with it MTN8 championship glory.
