The 17-year-old sprinter Benjamin Richardson has bagged South Africa's second medal at the World Athletics U20 World Championship taking place in Nairobi.
Richardson won the silver in the 100m sprint by clocking a time of 10.28 seconds in the final.
He was just .09 seconds of the winner, Letsile Tebogo, of Botswana who won the gold in a time of 10.32 seconds.
Sainer Rengifo Montoya of Cuba claimed the bronze medal.
“This is a big statement that Africa is coming up and very fast in sprints races,” said Richardson.
“Taking the top two positions means there is huge potential in us as the youngsters.
“My ambition is to start preps for the World championships next year while also eyeing the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
This takes South Africa's tally to two medals after the pole vaulter, Miré Reinstorf, won gold on Wednesday on day one of the championships.
