The International Cricket Council has confirmed that South Africa will play co-host to the 2027 Men's Cricket World Cup. South Africa, along with Namibia and Zimbabwe, will host the global showpiece in One-Day International cricket.
For South Africa it will be just the second time that a 50-over tournament will be hosted in the country, while for Namibia it will be the first time ever that they will host a major sporting event.
On Tuesday, the ICC announced that a total of 14 countries will be staging major cricket events post the 2023 season.
For the USA it will also be the first time that an event is staged in the country when they partner up with the West Indies to present the 2024 T20 World Cup.
In 2025, the Champions Trophy will be played in Pakistan, while the 2026 T20 World Cup will be co-hosted in India and Sri Lanka.
In 2028, Australia and New Zealand will co-host the T20 World Cup, with the Champions Trophy being played in India in 2029.
The 2030 T20 World Cup will be co-hosted in England, Ireland and Scotland, while India and Bangladesh will present the 2031 ODI World Cup.
The Chairperson of the ICC, Greg Barclay, said the naming of 14 host countries gives them an opportunity to grow the sport globally.
“We are delighted to have concluded this competitive bidding process for the first time for ICC events. To have 14 Members hosting 8 events is a reflection of the truly global nature of our sport and I’d like to thank every member that submitted a bid and offer our congratulations to the successful bidders.
“It is fantastic to be returning to so many previous hosts, but what is really exciting about this process is the countries who will stage ICC events for the first time, including the USA, which is a strategic growth market for us. This gives us the opportunity to deepen our connection with fans in traditional cricket nations and also reach new fans around the world.”
The next major cricket event is the 2022 T20 World Cup which will be hosted in Australia from 16 October to 13 November.
On Sunday, Australia beat New Zealand by 8 wickets in the T20 World Cup final to be crowned T20 world champions for the first time.
