The Proteas Women will be aiming to carry their momentum forward when they take on New Zealand in the second ICC Women’s Championship One-Day International in Wellington on Wednesday.

South Africa go into the clash with a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series after a nail-biting two-wicket win in Christchurch. The victory was sealed dramatically by Kayla Reyneke, whose unbeaten 42 – capped off with a six off the final ball – guided the visitors home.

All-rounder Suné Luus, who is set to become just the second South African player to play in 150 WODIs, praised the composure shown by the younger players, highlighting Reyneke’s decisive contribution under pressure.

“It’s great signs for the future of South African cricket,” said Luus. “It’s awesome just to see the players come in and just flourish like that. I think when we were younger, I can’t remember being that confident or just coming in and hitting sixes for fun.

“It’s really awesome to see how the women’s game has grown and how Kayla just took responsibility and earned it.”

The Proteas were equally impressive with the ball, with Ayabonga Khaka delivering a standout performance. The experienced seamer claimed a career-best six wickets, dismantling the White Ferns’ batting line-up and restricting them to 268.

Luus commended Khaka for her leadership within the attack, particularly her ability to strike at key moments and embrace responsibility.

“She took wickets at crucial times – she’s been a senior bowler for us for a very long time and always takes responsibility and loves a good challenge.

“I’m very happy for her. It’s a great milestone to get a six-fer. Hopefully, she can just continue picking up all the wickets for the next couple of games.”

With valuable ICC Women’s Championship points on offer, the Proteas are well aware of the stakes. Every result plays a crucial role in their push for automatic qualification for the 2029 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Luus stressed the importance of securing as many points as possible, with the aim of avoiding the uncertainty of the qualification route and not having to depend on other results.

“Very valuable. I think any point at this point in time is very crucial,” Luus added. “You don’t want to be going to qualifiers, and you don’t want to leave it up to chance as well, relying on other teams. Every game is very crucial for us, and tomorrow will be no different.”

The first ball at the Basin Reserve is scheduled to be bowled at 00:00.
