Anderson and Raven advance─── MORGAN PIEK 09:23 Thu, 04 Jul 2019
South Africans Kevin Anderson and Raven Klaasen advanced in their respective draws at Wimbledon in London on Wednesday.
Anderson needed four sets to overcome Janko Jipsarevic, winning 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-1 6-4 to get through to the third round of the men’s singles having fought off the Serbian.
In the end, Jipsarevic could not match the power from the tournament fourth seed, who dished out 24 aces to seal off an impressive showing.
It was also a happy first round appearance for doubles specialist Klaasen as he, alongside New Zealand partner, Michael Venus, saw off Johnny O’Mara and Luke Bambridge to triumph 7-5 7-6 (3) 6-4 in their doubles encounter.
Aided by the home support, the British pair also put in a feisty performance as they took the second set to a breakpoint, though in the end, could not match the class of both Klaasen and Venus.
The third seeds, who were the runner’s up in the tournament last year, move on to the second round stages.
