Harris pumped after Wawrinka win─── MORGAN PIEK 14:20 Wed, 10 Mar 2021
South Africa’s top-ranked men’s singles player, Lloyd Harris, earned the biggest win over his career by beating the three-time Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka, during the first round of the Qatar Open in Doha.
The 24-year-old Harris needed three sets to despatch with a 7-6, 6-7 and 7-5 win.
Following his win, Harris, said that just playing against his boyhood hero was special. “I don’t have many words right now.
“Stan was my idol growing up, so just to play against him was incredible. I was as determined as I could be, really pumped to play.
“I am proud of how I fought back after losing the second set. I feel like I’ve done really good in the past couple of months and I hope to keep the momentum going.”
On Wednesday evening, Harris will face Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in the second round.
