Nadal, who is the second seed for the tournament, enjoyed a first-round bye, while Harris beat the Canadian qualifier, Brayden Schnur, 6-3 and 6-2.

Last week the 24-year-old Harris stunned Nadal with a 6-4, 1-6 and 6-4 win during the third round of the Citi Open in Washington D.C. The South African did go on to lose to Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals.

This was the first-ever meeting between Harris and Nadal.

The winner of this match will face the 14th seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria or the USA's Reilly Opelka, in the round of 16. Harris and Dimitrov have faced each other once before and that was earlier in the year when the South African won 6-3, 3-6, and 7-6 at the Madrid Open.

Nadal is the defending champion at the Canadian Open after winning in the event in 2019. Last year, the tournament was called off due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
