The 2022 Australian Open in Melbourne got underway on Monday morning and the years’ first Grand Slam was heavily overshadowed by the Novak Djokovic-saga.

For South Africa’s Lloyd Harris it was a less than ideal start to the year as he was eliminated from the hard-court slam in the first round.

The 30th seeded Harris was beaten 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-7 by the Australian wild card Aleksandar Vukic, who is ranked 144th in the world.

Harris will still play in the men’s doubles, but this time he will partner the Australian, Alexei Popyrin.

They will face the fourth-seeded duo from Columbia, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, in the open round of the doubles competition.

Meanwhile, the two-time Grand Slam finalist, Kevin Anderson, also exited the Australian Open in the first round with a straight-sets defeat to the big serving American, Ryan Opelka. Opelka beat Anderson 6-6, 6-4 and 7-6.
