Carlos Alcaraz won the men's singles at the Roland Garros in Paris following a marathon five-setter against Alexander Zverev.

On Sunday, the 21-year-old Spanish star needed 4 hours and 19 minutes on court to win his third Grand Slam title and first on Court Phillipe-Chatrier. He has previously won the US Open as well as Wimbledon in London.

Alcaraz beat Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1 and 6-2 to win the clay-court slam following what was an up-and-down final by both players.

Alcaraz said while winning a first Grand Slam is always special, but winning the French Open is something that he has dreamt about since a boy, especially being Spanish and growing up in the shadow of the great Rafael Nadal.

“Winning your first in every Grand Slam is always super special,” said Alcaraz.

“But in Roland-Garros, knowing all the Spanish players who have won this tournament and being able to put my name on that amazing list is something unbelievable.

It’s something that I dream about being in this position since I started playing tennis, since I was five, six years old. It's a great, great feeling.”

The next step for Alcaraz is to start turning his attention to his Wimbledon singles title defence.

Meanwhile, on Saturday Iga Swiatek of Poland won the women's singles for a third year in a row after being Jasmine Paolini of Italy in a one-sided final.

Swiatek won the women's final 6-2 and 6-1.
