Dreams continue to be a fascinating area of scientific research. For all the advancements made in the field of sleep psychology, there's still a great deal we do not fully understand about what happens to our bodies (and brains!) at night. For instance, think about the last dream you had. Was it last night? What was it about? It's quite common to experience difficulty in recalling the content of dreams.

First, some quick background on one of the greatest things in this world: sleep. A typical night of sleep is divided into 5 cyclical stages. In the first four, the muscles relax, the pulse slows, and the brain's oscillating voltage is at its lowest-firing a mere zero to four times per second. After about an hour, the body enters the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase. This is the final stage of sleep where brain activity picks up a bit. Brain waves speed up to the alpha wavelength of 8 to 13 Hertz. The eyes move around and the heart rate increases too. All other muscles remain paralyzed though, thanks to Glycine and Gamma-Aminobutyric acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. Both of these amino acids inhibit signals originating in your brain from reaching your motor neurons. The REM cycle is when we dream the most too.

So why can it be so hard to remember dreams when we wake up? There are several scientific theories out there. First, we often experience dreams once and never again, so they are not processed into our long-term memory. If you regularly experience a certain dream, it's much easier to recall details about it. The sleep cycle may also play a roll in dream memory. Many scientists believe that we only remember the last of our dreams. If you wake up during one of the other phases of sleep besides REM, it can be difficult to recall the dream. These are just a few developing theories, but there's plenty of more research to be done.
