• 1987: The search for survivors from the Helderberg SAA 747 crash into the Indian Ocean off Mauritius is called off. No survivors have been found. There were 159 people aboard the aircraft.
• 1998: Sanlam is listed as a public company on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
• 2004: A lesbian couple's appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal to have their marriage legally recognised and registered succeeds. Marie Fourie and her partner of twelve years, Cecelia Bonthuys may be the first same-sex couple to wed legally in SA.
• 2005: A group of forty German travel agents are robbed at gunpoint of their handbags in their bus at Cape Town's Khayelitsha township.
 
Arts, Music, TV:
 
• 1937: Jan H.H. de Waal (65), SA author, dies in Cape Town.
• 1945: Geoffrey Lawrence Vinal Armstrong, S.A. artist, is born in Vereeniging, Transvaal.
• 1988: Cape Times reports that the Cape Town City Council has voted to reject the Group Areas Act of 1966 and to request that the entire city be 'restored as an open area'.
• 1970: George Harrison releases his triple album set "All Things Must Pass".
• 1971: TV movie "Brian's Song" airs for 1st time on ABC-TV.
 
Sports:
 
• 1912: The SA rugby team scores ten tries and beats Ireland 38-0 in Dublin.
• 1928: Test Cricket debut of Don Bradman, who scored 18 & 1 vs England.
• 1948: Baseball's Negro National League disbands.
• 1996: The SA rugby team wins the second test against France 22-12 in Bordeaux, France.
