• 1978: Prime Minister, B.J.Vorster, states that South Africa is still committed to granting independence to Namibia before the end of 1978.
• 1995: Nelson Mandela announces he will not stand for re-election in 1999.
• 1986: Twenty Black students are admitted to the Pretoria University.
