Murdered FS girl’s case back in spotlight | News Article
Naledi Chaka

Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela and MEC for Human Settlements, Tshidi Koloi, are on Thursday expected to hand over a newly built house to the family of a 4-year-old Thaba ‘Nchu girl, who was found dead and dumped in a pit toilet over a month ago.

The girl, Naledi Chaka, was reported missing before her body was discovered not far from her home in Seloshesha. The little girl’s clothes were found three streets away from her home soon after her disappearance. According to her mother, Matshitso Chaka, Naledi was playing with her friends near her house when she last saw her.

She told the police that following Naledi’s disappearance, her friends told her that a certain man promised Naledi gifts and sweets if she walked with him. A 36-year-old male nurse, employed at Botshabelo Hospital, has since been arrested and is facing charges of kidnapping, rape, and murder. A house built in Naledi’s memory will be handed over to her parents this afternoon.

The unveiling of the house comes at the time when the country is reeling from cases of femicide following the much-publicised death of a UCT student, Uyinene Mrwetyana. She was allegedly attacked, raped and murdered by a 42-year-old Post Office employee in the Western Cape.

Her death has sparked more anger and fear regarding the lack of safety and security of women and children in the country, with many calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare the victimisation and killing of women as a national crisis.

Many social media users are taking to Twitter and Facebook to raise their concerns over the increasing cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
