The North West Provincial Government’s battle against the global coronavirus pandemic is set to be boosted on Wednesday when a newly built clinic worth R26 million will be handed over.

The handover of this clinic in Bethanie in Brits by Glencore, a mining company operating in the North West, will come as a relief for the province which is battling to deal with the surge of Covid-19 infections.

This comes as the mining sector in the province continues to account for a bulk of the 14,634 cumulative cases, with the region of Bojanala, which includes Brits, accounting for most of these cases. The departmental spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, says this R26 million clinic consists of sixteen nurses, two doctors, a midwife and a dentist. The clinic has also increased the number and size of consulting rooms and waiting areas.

This comes a week after the department announced that 100 more beds will soon be made available for coronavirus patients in the hard-hit Bojanala District. Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, said this as the district - which is the epicentre for the virus in the province - continues to experience a surge in Covid-19 cases.

Two wards at the Job Shimankana Tabane (JST) Hospital, together with the Rustenburg Town Clinic, are being remodelled to make 100 additional Covid-19 beds available. He says these beds will be used for patients who are unable to isolate at home and those with any other illnesses.

“Proceedings will start at 10h00 at Bethanie Primary School with a donation of PPE to the value of R520 000 as part of Mandela Month celebrations. The donation includes 161 litres of sanitiser, 101 sanitiser stands, 548 sanitiser spray bottles (100ml), 33 000 surgical masks, 370 cloth masks, and 98 boxes of soap bars (50 in a box),” Lekgethwane adds.
