The Provincial Department of Education has appointed 2 138 markers, 442 examination assistants, 23 centre managers, 18 deputy centre managers and 32 admin support personnel. The markers have been deployed to 23 marking centers across the province. 

The department’s MEC, Tate Makgoe, says they have ensured that safety measures are in place in compliance with Covid-19 regulations. Makgoe adds all marking centres are provided with PPE and in the event of a marker testing positive for Covid-19, a reserve marker is available.

The department confirmed that teachers who were appointed as markers of matric exam papers did not undergo testing before starting with the marking on Thursday. Makgoe adds that mobile clinics have been deployed to testing centres in the event of a marker testing positive for Covid-19 during the duration of the marking process. 

As part of precautions, the department had to secure more schools to accommodate teachers while complying with social distancing regulations.
