FS residents warned about possibility of wildfires─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:32 Thu, 16 Sep 2021

Farmers and land users in the Free State province are urged to be on high alert for possible veld fires.
This, after the South African Weather Services issued a high Fire Danger Index (FDI) warning for Thursday. The SAWS has cautioned that wind speed of over 30 kilometres per hour is expected and will change direction from north-east this morning to south-west later in the day as the cold front passes through.
The Operational manager of the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association, Jan de Villiers, said the Free State Fire Association has to keep its equipment ready for any possible fires that may occur.
According to De Villiers, no open fires will be permitted, except in specially designed fireplaces. Hot work with machinery in open areas should be minimised and fire extinguishing equipment must be on site.
Personnel and firefighting equipment must be available to respond. He also said that any fire that may occur should be reported to the local fire brigade services as soon as possible.
