The blockade reported on the N3 at Van Reenen’s Pass has been cleared and traffic is now flowing freely with no reported obstructions.

The N3 Toll Concession announced just after 05:00 this morning that the road is now cleared, following a busy night of recovery operations.

These operations include the towing of trucks that were obstructing the N3, if spare keys couldn’t be located to have them moved.

Traffic on this part of the N3 heading to KwaZulu-Natal from the Free State became obstructed in the early hours of Friday morning.

Footage from local helicopters/aircraft depicted vehicles lined up in a snake fashion, seemingly for tens of kilometres.

According to reports, the cause of the demonstration was the absence of feedback on the employment of foreign nationals in the South African logistics and trucking industry.

Following demonstrations on the N3 and N9 in late October, the Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, and the Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi, vowed that feedback from a task team would be given to the local drivers on this years-long issue.

It comes as the South African government has vowed to introduce policy changes pertaining to border access controls and tighter regulations for foreign drivers to work in South Africa.
