SA sets Guinness World Record on Heritage Day─── 09:12 Thu, 25 Sep 2014
Cape Town - Yesterday Hungry Lion set a new Guinness World Record for the largest serving of fried chicken ever.
To celebrate Heritage Day, over 1.6 tonnes (1,631.216kg) of free chicken was served to Mitchells Plain residents.
According to Tashalene Reid, Brand Marketing Manager at Hungry Lion, the main aim of the record attempt was to give back to one of Hungry Lion's most loyal communities. Mitchells Plain residents received 13,644 free pieces of Hungry Lion King Sized Chicken with a free Coca-Cola.
“Not only did we put smiles on thousands of faces, today was also about Hungry Lion (a Proudly South African brand) breaking the world record within a community that supports us every day, therefore Heritage Day was the perfect day to create an event like this, which is all about friends and family coming together to celebrate the diversity of our proudly South African heritage.”
Hungry Lion smashed the current world record of 1,076kg with a serving of over 1.6 tonnes of free chicken served to participants from a mega sized, four metre high version of the iconic Hungry Lion Pride Bucket, which was specially produced for the Guinness World Record attempt.
In 2010, the record was claimed by KFC in Kentucky, Louisiana, with a serving of 907kg, in celebration of its 70th birthday. In 2011, the record was broken in Japan by the Qatar Food Company at the Karaage* Festival with a serving weighing in at 1,076kg.
While queuing at Liberty Promenade Mall, crowds were entertained by the popular Shoprite TopStars singers, a compilation of 12 top singers from the competitions' eight year history. The group of singers recently released their All-stars CD and performed from the Coca-Cola mobile concert rig erected at the event.
When the announcement was made by Guy MacDonald of Goodhope FM that the record had been broken, the crowd erupted with loud cheers.
The event was the culmination of Hungry Lion's successful ‘Lucky Bucket' campaign which has seen over 2 million digital voucher downloads, a double-digit sales growth for the brand and a increase in brand engagement by more than 200% than the current Fast Food industry benchmark.
“We have handed out over R10-million in prizes since the inception of the campaign, which ran nationally in line with our Give Mzansi More brand promise,” says Reid.
The competition's R100,000 grand prize winner, Tracy-Ann Links, who lives in Atlantis, Cape Town, received her cheque on stage, at the event. When initially being notified that she had won, she was overcome with emotion and said that as a teacher and mother, the money would change her life forever.
“While we chose Cape Town as the destination to break the record, we also offered a special Heritage Day Feast (R50 for six pieces of our delicious BIGGER King Sized Chicken and 3 full portions of our thick cut chips) across South Africa in our 167 outlets for the day,” Reid adds.
The world record will be officially verified by Guinness Book of Records, and according to their requirements 2 independent auditors were present who ensured the record was true to the submission requirements stipulated.
