English sheep shearer in SA to "learn from the best"─── 17:54 Tue, 01 Nov 2016
Bloemfontein - A former sheep shearing world champion is currently in South Africa on a visit in preparation for the world championships in New Zealand next year.
The National Wool Growers Association (NWGA) says George Mudge from England is the only competitor ever to qualify in both the hand and machine shearing world championship finals.
He represented England twice in the eighties and was also accredited as one of the top six shearers in the world.
He spent some time with the current hand shearing world champion, Mayenzeke Shweni, from Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape.
Sixty-nine-year-old Mudge will participate in the hand shearing category at next year’s Championships. Mudge is full of praise for the skills of South African shearers and says he decided to come and visit to learn from the best.
