Cheetahs set to tackle Black Lion in October─── MORGAN PIEK 13:45 Tue, 30 Sep 2025
The Toyota Cheetahs will be back in action in October when they host the fifth annual Toyota Challenge in Bloemfontein.
This year’s Toyota Challenge will have a fresh twist, with the Georgians returning to the City of Roses in the form of Black Lion. The side, who also compete in the EPCR Challenge Cup, boast several international players and are coached by the experienced Richard Cockerill.
Earlier this year, the Cheetahs hosted the Georgian national team in a warm-up game ahead of the Currie Cup, which turned into a bruising battle for both sides. On that day, the Cheetahs narrowly edged the Lelos 24-20 in Bloemfontein, with debutant Ntokozo Mahkaza crossing the line twice.

For both teams, these fixtures are crucial as the Toyota Challenge serves as key preparation for their upcoming EPCR Challenge Cup campaigns.
Black Lion have been drawn in Pool 1 alongside the Ospreys (Wales), Zebre (Italy), Montpellier (France), US Montauban (France), and Connacht (Ireland). The Cheetahs, in turn, are in Pool 3 with Cardiff (Wales), Exeter Chiefs (England), Racing 92 (France), Stade Français (France), and Ulster (Northern Ireland).
Cheetahs CEO Rory Duncan told OFM Sport that they are looking forward to welcoming Black Lion back to Bloemfontein and expect a fierce contest between the two Challenge Cup outfits.
“This year, we’re proud to be hosting the fifth annual Toyota Challenge, with the Georgians returning to Bloemfontein in the form of Black Lion,” said the former Cheetahs lock and captain.
“Black Lion are part of the EPCR competition as well, so this is a fantastic chance to bring international rugby back to our home ground.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge. They’re a quality side, but I know Frans Steyn and his team are ready for it.”
Black Lions coach and Leicester Tigers great, Richard Cockerill, said they are thrilled to be returning to Bloemfontein next month.

“As a Black Lion team, we are delighted to be invited to take part in the Toyota Challenge competition,” said the former England international.
“The Cheetahs franchise is known worldwide, and the Toyota Stadium is an unbelievable venue to play rugby. We anticipate two tough games, and as a Black Lion franchise, we look forward to a warm South African welcome both on and off the field.”
The second of the two matches will be preceded by a curtain-raiser that will be contested by the Cheetahs Legends and the Bulls Legends.
The first clash at Toyota Stadium takes place on Friday, 17 October, with kick-off at 18:00, while the second match is scheduled for Sunday, 26 October, starting at 15:00.
