Meat products to be disposed of following ammonia leak | News Article

Welkom - Meat products exposed to ammonia gas last night at Sparta Foods in Welkom, are in the process of being contained and disposed of in a safe manner.

This is according to Sparta’s Niel Venter, and follows after a pipe burst yesterday just after 18:00 releasing the toxic fumes.

Twenty-five of 27 Sparta Foods employees, who were admitted to Mediclinic Welkom yesterday after inhaling the gas, have since been discharged.

Mediclinic spokesperson Marissa Pawson earlier confirmed to OFM News that only two employees remain hospitalised for observation – a pregnant woman and an older man who collapsed at the scene.

Meanwhile Venter says while evacuation processes last night went smoothly, they were hampered by changing wind directions.

He added this was the largest such incident in Sparta’s history.
