Forty-seven people arrested in Fouriesburg unrest─── MARK STEENBOK 17:33 Thu, 17 May 2018
The police in the eastern Free State have confirmed that 47 people, which includes minors, have been arrested in connection with unrest that broke out in Fouriesburg.
Police spokesperson, Zweli Mohobeleli, says arrangements are being made to release the minors back into the care of their parents.
Mohobeleli says people started rioting last night when residents barricaded the R26 between Bethlehem and Fouriesburg with burning tyres and stones. This includes an intersection that leads to adjacent towns such as Clarens and Ficksburg.
Mohobeleli says several vehicles including a police vehicle were damaged after it was pelted with stones. It is still unclear what led to the unrest.
Mohobeleli says the suspects are expected to appear in the local magistrates court soon on charges of public violence. More arrests are expected to follow.
