Political analyst blame ZANU-PF tensions for blast in Zimbabwe | News Article

Zimbabwean police said they were searching for a motive for an explosion at President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s election rally that injured 49 people, Reuters reported.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, the general who led a de facto coup that forced long-time leader Robert Mugabe to resign in November, described Saturday’s blast as a “terrorist act” that would not stop July 30 presidential, parliamentary and local elections, Zimbabwe’s first post-Mugabe vote.

eNCA reports some political analysts are blaming tensions within Zimbabwe’s ZANU-PF party for the blast.

The country’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, escaped unhurt when an explosive device detonated at Bulawayo’s White City stadium.

At least 49 people were wounded.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has been joined by local opposition parties in condemning the blast.

University of Johannesburg (UJ)'s Professor David Moore says it’s a sign of ongoing political decline in Zimbabwe.

But he believes it couldn't have been a real attempt to eliminate Mnangagwa.
