The recent cyber-attack at Transnet has prompted a call for citrus growers to slow down the harvesting, packaging and transporting of their fruit for export. The logistics company's IT system was targetted by hackers around the time of the unrest last month. It exacerbated the backlog of products waiting to leave our shores - which had started when KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were hit by violence causing some key economic routes to be shut down. The Durban-based SA Citrus Growers Association says they've had to issue the call as large amounts of produce were still coming through from as far as Limpopo and other parts of the country -  all waiting to go through the Durban harbour. CEO Justin Chadwick says 2.5 million tonnes of citrus are exported through the Durban port each year.

The amendment to Section 25 of the Constitution will only contribute to the misery of South Africa. This was the message to Parliament from more than 107 000 citizens who took part in Free State Agriculture's public campaign to protect property rights and oppose the constitutional amendment of Section 25. Free State Agriculture's president, Francois Wilken, says in a statement that the support from the public shows that the organisation's view on property rights has a much wider support base than just the organisation's agricultural members. The organisation submitted its opposing comments to the parliamentary committee on Friday 13 August. Its reasons for rejecting amendments to Section 25, included local and international investment uncertainty that will further impede employment growth, as well as the concern that the amendment will open the gap for zero compensation of all property.
