The Northern Cape Artists Exhibition is a biannual event that occurs at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley.

Curatorial Assistant at WHAG, Malikah Meyer, joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the current exhibition, as well as the mentorship workshops being hosted. The exhibition is open to the public until 31 August 2025.

Amplifying Diverse Voices Through Art – A Youth Month Celebration

The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) is delighted to announce the opening of the Bi-annual Northern Cape Artists Exhibition on Wednesday, 10 July 2025. The exhibition features a compelling mix of drawing, painting, collage, photography, and illustration by a diverse range of artists from the Northern Cape – from the well-established to those exhibiting for the very first time.

This year’s edition was shaped by an enthusiastic response to an Open Call issued earlier this year, which invited submissions from artists living and working in the province. The adjudication panel, led by WHAG’s curatorial team, undertook a thoughtful and rigorous selection process, ensuring that the final exhibition represents multiple artistic voices and practices, reflecting the richness and variety of the Northern Cape’s creative community.

The gallery does an online call-out for applicants born in the Northern Cape to submit their artworks for consideration. The selected artists then deliver their chosen works to the gallery, where the works get installed, and they host an opening night for the public to come and appreciate the art.

This event is a great opportunity for all Northern Cape artists – the opportunity to showcase their works in one of three national art museums in South Africa, in their very own province. The artists usually range from up-and-comers to decades-old practitioners who are all seizing this rare chance to get their work seen on this scope.

Particularly for artists from underrepresented or rural contexts

The Northern Cape Artist Exhibition is also a chance for the artists to receive mentorship in the form of workshops by Chief Curator, Chepape Makgato, and other professionals who can give guidance and career advice to the artists.

Timed to coincide with the country’s Youth Month commemorations, the exhibition pays tribute to the spirit of June 16, foregrounding the voices and visions of young people through the arts. The platform provided by this exhibition reaffirms WHAG’s commitment to creating space for expression, experimentation, and visibility, particularly for artists from underrepresented or rural contexts.

“This exhibition is a vital expression of the Northern Cape’s creative pulse,” said the WHAG curatorial team. “It gives voice not only to the region’s seasoned artists but also to a bold new generation, many of whom are sharing their work with the public for the very first time.”
