Odeion String Quartet celebrates 35 years of collaboration─── 13:05 Wed, 01 Apr 2026
This year, the Odeion String Quartet (OSQ) reaches a remarkable milestone – 35 years of artistry, heritage, and musical storytelling.
There is something profoundly special about an ensemble that can weather the changing tides of time while keeping the soul of chamber music alive. Samantha Durrant, 1st violinist of the OSQ, joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to invite audiences to join in the celebrations this year.
Celebrating 35 years of harmony: A milestone for the Odeion String Quartet
To celebrate this emerald anniversary, the quartet invites you to a spectacular evening of music on Thursday, 23 April, at the Odeion Auditorium. This isn’t just a concert; it is a tribute to three and a half decades of excellence and a gift to the community that has supported them since the beginning.
The programme, filled with South African sounds as well as Dvorak’s ‘Piano Quintet number 2’, will also be presented at the Clarens Arts Festival the next day (24/4).
A program of passion and heritage
The anniversary program is a beautiful reflection of the OSQ’s identity, firmly rooted in South African soil while embracing the grandeur of the international stage. The evening’s repertoire promises to take the audience on an emotional journey:
Khumalo’s ‘Princess Magogo’: A tribute to indigenous melodic genius and South African narrative.
Hofmeyr’s ‘Of Darkness and the Heart’: A contemporary exploration of depth and emotion.
Dvorák’s ‘Piano Quintet No. 2’: A masterpiece of Romanticism, known for its sweeping melodies and rhythmic energy.
A celebration this grand deserves a few friends on stage. The quartet will be joined by two phenomenal South African talents: Siphokazi Maphumulo and Megan-Geoffrey Prins. Their collaboration with the OSQ promises to bring a fresh layer of brilliance and technical mastery to the evening’s performances.
Whether you are a lifelong lover of chamber music or a newcomer looking for an inspiring evening out, this milestone concert is the perfect opportunity to experience the power of live performance.
