Inspired by the Akan concept of Sankofa, meaning to go back and fetch something of value, the concert explores how African musical traditions can be revisited, reimagined and transformed within contemporary settings.

The performance brings together indigenous African musical influences, earlier popular genres and contemporary jazz, highlighting how traditional sounds continue to evolve through collaboration and new musical interpretations.

Leading the concert is Joseph Kunnuji, trumpeter, composer and senior lecturer in Ethnomusicology and African Music at the University of the Free State. Kunnuji is joined by fellow musicians, including members of the OSM Pan-African Jazz Ensemble, as well as artists from Bloemfontein’s broader jazz and popular music community.

The programme features original compositions by Kunnuji and Dr D.A. “Sonkanise” ka Nkosi, showcasing a vibrant fusion of African musical traditions and contemporary sounds.
