Mother Tongue: Anastasia Pather’s art speaks through touch─── 08:00 Tue, 13 Oct 2026
For South African artist Anastasia Pather-Bosman, art is more than a form of expression – it is her first language.
Anastasia joins Yolanda Maartens on OFM Art Beat to talk about Mother Tongue, her first solo museum exhibition, on display at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley until 26 November 2026.
The exhibition explores themes of identity, belonging, memory and self-understanding, with Anastasia using painting as a way to process and express her experiences. A distinctive feature of her work is that she paints primarily with her fingers rather than conventional brushes.
This tactile approach creates a direct connection between the artist and the canvas, allowing touch, movement and intuition to become part of the artistic language. The title Mother Tongue reflects Anastasia’s belief that art-making has always been her first language – a way of understanding herself, her culture and her place in the world.

The exhibition is presented alongside the gallery’s Women’s Printmaking Exhibition, drawn from the WHAG permanent collection, creating a dialogue around women’s voices, identity and artistic expression.
