Bloemfontein art studio invites public to pick up a paintbrush─── DITEBOGO MOLEMFI 08:35 Mon, 26 Oct 2026
Between work deadlines, school runs, and family responsibilities, finding time to do something purely for yourself can feel like another task on an already crowded to-do list.
What if you could take two hours out of your busy schedule to paint, socialise and enjoy a drink? It could be the perfect opportunity to unwind, escape the everyday rush, and do something just for yourself.
That is the idea behind Lemon Art Studios in Bloemfontein, where an experienced art teacher is creating a space for people to explore their creativity without the pressure of getting everything right.
After more than three decades in teaching, Rae Gagiano wants to take art beyond the classroom, where marks, deadlines, and assessments can sometimes overshadow the enjoyment of creating something. “I want to bring fun back to art,” she says.
The workshops are designed for adults who want to try something different, whether they have painted before or have never picked up a brush. Participants receive step-by-step guidance, with prepared outlines and a choice of designs, allowing everyone to work at their own pace.
The sessions also leave room for conversation, snacks, and a drink, turning painting into a relaxed social experience rather than a lesson to be graded.
One of the upcoming workshops draws inspiration from Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who used art as a form of self-expression. Despite the challenges in her personal life, Kahlo developed a distinctive artistic style.

The bigger lesson is that creativity should not be graded or criticised. Many people hesitate to try art because they fear their work will not be good enough. Gagiano believes criticism can discourage spontaneous creativity.
The message is simple: you do not have to be an artist to enjoy making art. The name Lemon Art Studios reflects that spirit, with Gagiano hoping the studio will always have a little zest.
For anyone feeling weighed down by everyday responsibilities, the invitation is to set aside a little time for themselves and enjoy a creative experience without worrying about producing a perfect painting.
“Please come on a Friday for two hours,” Gagiano says, encouraging people to arrive unsure of their abilities and leave feeling relaxed and proud of what they have created.
The next workshop takes place on Friday (30/10), offering Bloemfontein residents an opportunity to step away from their routines, pick up a paintbrush, and discover the joy of creating something of their own.
