Social markets might be the future of events─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 20:30 Wed, 08 Mar 2023
Rolling blackouts have had a significant impact on the events industry, but Koolest Sunday founder Lwando Mhobo believes social markets may be the way of the future for event planning companies.
Mhobo says that while any event can be organised around a load-shedding schedule, social markets have an advantage because they are typically held during daytime hours and are less dependent on power supply.
Having said that, he doesn't think load-shedding would cripple the entertainment industry the way the Covid-19-pandemic did.
According to Mhobo, the scale of the effects of load-shedding and Covid-19 on the events sector differs.
"Covid-19wreaked havoc in the entertainment industry because it halted events for months. Social gatherings were prohibited, making it impossible for those working in the industry to perform their duties. While I do not want to minimise the effect of load-shedding on the industry, I just feel that it is not as significant as Covid-19, "says Mhobo.
He believes the best form of preparation for load-shedding is the same as what the energy experts have been recommending: a generator and power inverters.

He also says that he believes South African patrons will not put so much pressure on the sector because everyone is aware of the elephant in the room - namely load-shedding.
His four guidelines for hosting a successful event are:
- Extensive research and strategic planning;
- Knowing your target audience;
- Selecting the right venue;
- Most importantly, put together a team of like-minded people.
Mhobo concluded with his three business lessons:
- Be strategic;
- Be able to face challenges head-on;
- Seek out a mentor who will guide you.
