The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) says the Accident and Incident Investigations Division is investigation the death of two men following a fatal plane crash near Hartbeespoort Dam, west of Akasia in the North West on Saturday.

Spokesperson, Kabelo Ledwaba, says the investigation into the incident will seek to uncover the circumstances and cause(s) that led to the accident involving a Cessna 172 light aircraft .

He adds the plane was reported as missing on Friday night, and that the aircraft had taken off from Grand Central Airport in Midrand for a training flight.

OFM News previously reported that ER24 spokesperson, Ross Campbell, said the bodies of two men were found in the wreckage - they showed no signs of life and were declared dead on the scene.

“We offer our condolences to the colleagues, friends and families of the individuals,” Ledwaba says. He adds that the purpose of an investigation is to determine the cause(s) of the occurrence and where possible come up with safety recommendations that could help prevent similar accidents.

“A preliminary report, with a bit more detail, will be issued within 30 days from the day of the occurrence. If the investigation is not completed within 12 months, an interim statement will be released,“ he further adds.

“Only the police are allowed to release the names and related details of those who were fatally injured,” Ledwaba concludes.
