Trio arrested for alleged kidnap, murder of Lesotho shepherd | News Article

Three men were arrested by Free State police this week after allegedly kidnapping and stabbing to death a Lesotho national working as a shepherd.

According to provincial police spokesperson, brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the shepherd was at home in Borwa, near Tweespruit, when the three men knocked on the door of his house.

One of the suspects, a miner in Postmasburg, had hired the shepherd to look after his livestock and a calf had gone missing. The man allegedly wanted to enquire about his animal.

"The three allegedly assaulted the shepherd and forcefully dragged him to a white BMW car belonging to the miner from Postmasburg. They allegedly took him to a local stadium around Borwa and stabbed him several times in the neck.

"They further drove towards Excelsior where they threw him out on the R709 road and left him by the side of the road. A nearby farmer alerted the police after noticing the body next to the road," said Makhele.

Two of the suspects, aged 30 and 45, were traced and arrested in the Borwa area on Tuesday. The 44-year-old miner was arrested on Wednesday.

The men appeared in the Ladybrand Magistrate's Court on charges of kidnapping and murder and the case was remanded to January 13 for bail application.

The suspects remain in custody.
