The Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, Health MEC Montseng Tsiu and Director-General (DG) for the province, Kopung Ralikontsane, have tested positive for Covid-19.

Spokesperson in the Office of the Premier, Setjhaba Maphalla, confirms Ralikontsane and Tsiu's results returned positive over the weekend, while Ntombela's results returned positive yesterday.

He confirms they are in isolation while Tsiu is receiving medical attention.

Ntombela is set to continue with her duties while in isolation, while Cogta MEC Thembeni Nxangisa will act on behalf of Tsiu until she recovers.

Ntombela is the second Premier to test positive for the Coronavirus in central South African following the recent recovery of North West Premier Job Mokgoro.

Maphalla urges all citizens of the province to play their part in observing Covid-19 protocols. He further pleads with all residents to continue washing hands, sanitising regularly, to wear a mask at all times when in public, and to practice physical distancing.

"The Free State Provincial Government wishes to emphasise to the public that although the country moved to Alert Level 1 of the National Lockdown, from midnight on 20 September 2020, the fight against the virus is far from over, as we are still in the midst of a deadly pandemic," he said.

Maphalla in a statement added that "Premier Ntombela has, in terms of the provisions of section 32 of the Public Service Act, 1994 (Proclamation No. 103 of 1994), appointed the Deputy Director-General: Policy, Planning and Governance, Thuso Ramaema, as Acting Director-General from 12 October 2020 to 26 October 2020. The Free State Provincial Government wishes the Premier, MEC for Health, and the DG a speedy recovery".
