Spokesperson, Dan Maritz, says approximately 789 students have problems with their bank accounts, while 702 students have no banking details on the FUNDI system, which they use for payments. His statement comes amidst growing tensions at the university with students having embarked on protest actions at the Bloemfontein campus on Sunday. 

OFM News reported that non-payment of food and accommodation allowances has been mentioned as one of the main reasons for the protests with some students claiming to have not received it. Maritz, in a statement, however, says the university is aware of students’ grievances, and that payment of student allowances has been taking place from Friday.

"The information of 3 693 students has been finalised, and they started receiving their money from Saturday, 3 July 2021 until Monday, 5 July 2021. The University has been paying for these NSFAS allowances from its own funds. While the risk is acknowledged, CUT has done this to ensure that the academic year is not disrupted due to the financial situations of students," said Maritz.
 
He further stated that "CUT understands the plight of students, however, while we work to ensure they have received their allowances, their assistance is needed as some students’ details are not correct or complete".
