A fire erupted at the Fidel Castro Building in Bloemfontein in the Free State when an electric transformer, located inside the building, caught fire on Tuesday evening.
The spokesperson of Public Works, Mlungisi Maqubela, says on 7 September 2021, the transformer located in the building was damaged after it caught fire. This resulted in a heavy smoke screen inside the government building. Disaster Management and security personnel immediately advised all officials who were in the building to evacuate to allow the necessary assessments and investigations to be conducted. He said that no vehicles, staff, or surrounding buildings were affected by the fire as it was contained within a short space of time.
Maqubela said the departments that have been affected by the incident, include Education, Public Works, Infrastructure, Human Settlements, Provincial Treasury, and the Office of the Premier. He said that officials that were affected by the incident will resume their duties remotely on Wednesday to allow service delivery to prevail.
