The Free State Emergency Medical Service (EMS) has given an update on the road carnage that took place this morning on the R707 road between Senekal and Marquard.

EMS spokesperson, Sipho Towa, confirms that the death toll has now risen to seven.

This was after officials at the scene discovered two more bodies.

OFM News this morning reported that a toddler and four adults died and burned beyond recognition during a fatal accident after a minibus taxi collided with the trailer of a truck.

A total of six patients with light, moderate and critical injuries were transported to the Itemoheng District Hospital in Senekal for urgent medical attention.

The road is still closed and the police and EMS personnel are still on the scene to conduct further investigations.

Towa earlier said one person was left with critical injuries, two with moderate injuries and three with light injuries. The accident has since led to the closure of the road and motorists have been urged to use alternative routes.

OFM News previously reported about numerous fatal crashes across major routes in the province in which lives of motorists have been lost.

Earlier the Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, was in Bloemfontein to launch the Festive Season Road Safety awareness campaign.
