Suspect killed in an act of vigilantism in NW─── LUCKY NKUYANE 16:33 Wed, 16 Mar 2022

A 26-year-old man, who was a suspect in two burglary cases in Khuma near Stilfontein outside Klerksdorp in the North West, was allegedly burned to death by an irate group of residents.
The attack, which claimed the life of the suspect who has been identified as Victor Chauke, comes after he was released on bail. He was originally arrested in January this year. Angry residents allegedly accused Chauke of theft.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, confirms to OFM News that the police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, arson and malicious property to damage.
Chauke was out on bail of an R1 000. He was declared dead on the scene.
"His 56-year-old mother and his 33-year-old friend escaped with serious burn injuries following attempts to set them alight by members of the community, who accused them of harbouring Chauke. They were rushed to the local hospital for medical attention," Mokgwabone adds.
Angry residents allegedly partially burned the victim's house while a police vehicle was damaged during the attack.
Mokgwabone adds that the Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, has since instructed the station commander to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted to ensure those who committed this illegal and brutal act of mob justice are apprehended.
He says that taking the law into one’s own hands is unlawful and must be discouraged.
"Kwena condemns in the strongest possible terms acts of vigilantism," Mokgwabone further adds.
