The legally embattled-Mayor, Dimakatso Modise, was arrested by the police after she was linked to the aforementioned charges - which lead to violent protests in Winburg and Theunissen.

DA delegate at NCOP, George Michalakis, tells OFM News that no citizen is above the law, and says that it is vital that where proof exists, law must be applied fairly and equally - to the mayor as well.

OFM News earlier reported that Modise is the fifth suspect to be arrested after four suspects were previously cuffed for inciting violence which led to the protests where a house belonging to the parents of former mayor, Kunatu Stephen Koalane, was set alight amidst protests in the area in 2021.

Modise is currently out on bail of R2 000 after she appeared in Theunissen's Magistrate Court.

She and four co-accused including former speaker, councillor and officer bearers are set to re-appear in court on Thursday. The case was postponed for further investigation.

"The fact that the first citizen of this municipality has been charged and for something such as this is an embarrassment, particularly for the ANC. A mayor should be the cream of the crop. If this is the best leader they have here, then it’s time to get rid of the ANC as a whole," Michalakis adds.

OFM News previously reported that the Lejweleputswa ANC Youth League regional chairperson, Mokgethi Setlhalefo, said Modise who is also the deputy regional coordinator of the interim structure should do the right thing and step aside as per the ANC’s 54th 2017 Nasrec National Conference.
