Thieves keep coming back to destroy substations belonging to the struggling Maluti-A-Phofung municipality in the Free State.

This time, SS1 - the substation that supplies electricity to the industrial area 1, Mphatlalatsane, Bochabela, Tosi, Matsikeng and Beula - has been vandalised.

Unfortunately, the service provider is unsure of how long the repair may take.

The continued vandalism of substations occurs as the municipality owes Eskom an amount of R6.5 billion.

In a previous interview with the Executive Mayor, Gilbert Mokotso, he told OFM News that if the residents could pay for electricity, Eskom's debt will be manageable.

Mokotso says municipal employees are already in the field trying to close up all the meter boxes that have been tampered with and left open in households.

He also promised to ensure that every ward has a vendor station to help with the selling of electricity to residents.

However, earlier this week, Eskom's spokesperson, Stefanie Jansen van Rensburg, in an exclusive interview with OFM News said "we presented active partnering with the Maluti-A-Phofung council on Tuesday and we await their answers on a resolution".

She added that "we have no other agreement in place at the moment".
