Truck drivers vow to protest until the national Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, addresses their demands.

This after protesting truck drivers had partially blockaded the N12 road between Bloemhof and Wolmaransstad in the North West on Wednesday. OFM News reported on Tuesday that roughly 100 trucks blockaded the R34 road. The secretary of All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied SA (ATDF ASA), Sifiso Nyathi, says that truck drivers are fed-up with employers and the government for being reluctant in removing foreign nationals from the trucking industry.

He says since 2018 they have been negotiating with different ministers and various stakeholders regarding the issue of foreign nationals - with no luck.

“Now the drivers said that they will stay here until RFA leaders, NERSA leaders, and the ministers, Mr Mbalula and Mr Nxesi, come here. We never blocked the road, all small cars are passing but drivers now say they want things in writing by the RFA, NESA and ministers, indicating when the foreigners will go, because our brothers are sitting at home, they don’t have work. It’s a fact - driving is not a scarce skill,” said Nyathi.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, protesters had blockaded the N3 road between Warden and Villiers in the Free State, ostensibly for the same reasons. Free State police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, later gave an update that the road had been re-opened for traffic. He said the police were still monitoring the situation following the incident.
