The cash-strapped Mangaung Metro Municipality's existing structural design and its accompanying bulk services can not cope with the growing population.

This is according to the Mangaung Mayor, Mxolisi Siyonzana, during a mayoral media breakfast held at the Bram Fischer Building on Tuesday morning.

Siyonzana said the municipality is currently trying to improve old infrastructure so that they could cope with the population growth of Mangaung. This, after mentioning that the metro will be working overtime to finish one of the water treatment plant projects, which contributed to water leakages and sewage problems.

Siyonzana was also outlining the municipality’s plans towards achieving a clean audit. The Mangaung Metro has been under scrutiny for some time, especially with issues of service delivery and mismanagement of funds, amongst others.

Siyonzana said that the metro is aware of the challenges faced by community members and requested the community members to work hand in hand with the metro in improving the city. He also called on residents to pay for services.

“We are moving towards the right direction. We set time frames and we are complying with those. We said, for instance, we are going to clean the city, people now see that we are moving towards that direction. We said we are going to patch the potholes, people are beginning to see that, but Rome was not built in one day. This project is what we as councilors are expected to do,” he adds.

Opposition parties have recently lamented the slow pace and lack of speed on service delivery issues in the troubled metro. The Freedom Front Plus Member in the Provincial Legislature (MPL), Elizabeth Snyman-Van Deventer, has said the lack of service delivery in Mangaung had hit rock bottom. The metro has, for a long time, been plagued by continuous protests of unhappy groups over the lack of service delivery, fraud, corruption, and the lack of accountability at the metro, among other issues.
