Mangaung residents' frustration increases over alleged water cuts | News Article

Disgruntled residents of Mangaung in the Free State are gathering again outside the Brandwag flats and are currently demonstrating their frustrations, with a heavy police presence on the scene.

These protests have continued since allegations that the metro had cut water supply to the Brandwag flats in Bloemfontein. One of the residents, who wishes to remain anonymous, told OFM News their taps have been running dry for the past three days. She says the children have not been attending school due to the lack of water and elderly people have also been negatively impacted by this water crisis. According to her, the residents were not informed about the water cuts and still don’t know the reason behind the lack of water supply. She adds that residents went out to the streets with placards to express their frustrations, however, things turned sour as they were allegedly attacked by the police, who are said to have fired shots at them.

The Free State police spokesperson, Wendy Nkabi, told OFM News that a group of about 50 residents from the Brandwag flats barricaded the intersection of Nelson Mandela Drive and DF Malherbe Avenue with burning tyres, big stones, and advertisement boards on Thursday. She stated that the group dispersed as soon as the police arrived on the scene. According to information shared with OFM News, residents have now again gathered outside the flats. This is a developing story.
