On Sunday 16 October 2022, Adelaide Madlongolwane, who is the last-born child of ANC struggle stalwarts Evelyn Debryn and Gideon Madlongolwane, revealed plans to remove images of her late parents from the Northern Cape monument. 

Debryn and Gideon Madlongolwane were part of the Upington 26 that were sent to death row in the eighties. Madlongolwane had said that her decision stemmed from being side-lined by the party.

The ANC spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Thabo Mothibi, says Madlongolwane blames the party for her own flaws. 

Mothibi explains that Madlongolwane's frustrations towards the party come after she was informed by the municipality that she has to re-apply for the post that she previously left, as the post will have to be advertised to give other candidates a fair chance to apply. 

He adds that Madlongolwane previously worked for the municipality, "resigned and squandered all her pension funds, and now wants to be given back a post that she had resigned from".

According to Mothibi, the government has built RDP houses for both Debryn and Gideon Madlongolwane. He adds that the only remaining child of Debryn chose to resign after she was employed at the municipality, while one child of the late Gideon Madlongolwane is a qualified circuit manager at the Department of Education and the other one is employed at the municipality. 

Madlongolwane says that she feels like she is being targeted by some officials from the party after she was promised a contract by the municipality but was later informed that she had to apply for the post.
