Free State school repaired to mark matric papers after hailstorm damage─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 05:33 Tue, 25 Oct 2022
The Thaba Nchu school that was damaged by a hailstorm in 2021 has been reconstructed and is ready to be used as a marking centre again for matric exam papers.
Albert Moroka Secondary School was hit by a hailstorm during the marking of the class of 2021’s scripts. The storm ripped through the area and blew off the roof of the centre. Some of the markers were injured by falling debris. The school hall, marking centre, control room and some classes were damaged.
In the latest update, the MEC of Education in the Free State, Tate Makgoe, is set to visit the school on Tuesday 25 October 2022 to update the media and take a tour around the renovated school as the department believes the marking centre is ready to take new markers for the year.

Most matriculants of 2022 will commence with their final examination on 31 October 2022 and conclude on 7 December 2022. The marking will commence on 8 December 2022 and conclude on 20 December 2022.
"My visit to the school is to show that we can keep our word, as we had promised that by the time of the commencement of the marking of the Class of 2022's papers, the centre would be ready," explains Makgoe.
During his visit to the school earlier in 2022, he calmed the anxieties that some scripts had been destroyed or missing from the storm and stated that all scripts were recovered safely.

During the visit, he stated that he is hopeful the school will be finished by the end of March 2022. However, he did promise that the class of 2022 will be marked at the centre as it will have been fully rebuilt.
This also means the grade 12 learners of Albert Moroka will be able to write their final examination at the school’s hall.
Makgoe stated earlier this year that it would be fair for the Class of 2022 to write their exams in the school hall, as the school is one of the top-performing schools in the province.

Makgoe has spent the day of 24 October 2022 at Kagisano School in Ikgomotseng, near Soutpan, encouraging the Class of 2022 ahead of the exam after one of the grade 12 teachers, Matefo Mphosela, was murdered, allegedly by one of the learners, Simphiwe Mondli.
"Her death must help us to improve the results of the school, as we learned that before her passing she was already revising Exam Paper 2 of Physical Science - which is very unusual for teachers to be doing," said Makgoe.
Mondli has been remanded in custody till his bail application on 31 October 2022.
