The heavily pregnant woman who was involved in an ambulance accident on Wednesday 16 November 2022, has safely delivered a baby girl.

The Free State Department of Health’s spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, says the woman delivered the baby the same day the accident occurred. The mother of the child is stable and conscious.

The accident happened while she was being transported to Kroonstad from Steynsrus. At the time of the accident, it was suspected that the cause might be the water on the road, however, an investigation has shown that a tyre burst on the right front wheel of the ambulance led the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which then overturned.

The paramedic on board sustained a fractured leg, and he is currently being treated at Kroon Hospital in Kroonstad.

While the driver was unharmed and was released from Boitumelo Hospital, the woman suffered pelvic and head injuries and was admitted to the hospital for observation while the clinical specialist team determined the next best course of action.

The accident occurred on the R76 road while travelling on a stretch of road that was under construction.
