A 36-year-old man from the North West will appear before the Mogwase Magistrate Court on Monday, 5 December 2022, for the alleged murder of his brother.

According to police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, the elder brother was arrested on Saturday for allegedly strangling his younger brother to death at their home in Lerome Village in Moruleng, near Mogwase outside Rustenberg.

Funani says that according to the information that was received by the police, the suspect and the victim had a quarrel before the incident. She says that police were called to the scene and the victim was found dead. She adds that the 36-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder.

"The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident and urged family members to solve their differences in an amicable way. He commended the Mogwase police for the swift arrest of the suspect," she said.

Funane went on to say that the investigation is still ongoing.

Police have since continued with their efforts to deal with the heightening crime that is expected over the festive season. This comes after Police Minister Bheki Cele announced that officers would not be granted leave during the festive season. The announcement did not sit well with the South African Policing Union (Sapu) and they responded by stating that Cele’s announcement was an act of provocation.
