The North West Department of Education says the National Senior Certificate exams for 2022 have been successfully completed.

This, despite minor incidents at the beginning of the exams.

OFM News previously reported that the exams were momentarily disrupted on the second day in North West due to a taxi protest in Zeerust.

However, all learners managed to write their Economics paper 1 on the day, even though they wrote it a few hours later.

In the meantime, provincial Education spokesperson - Elias Malindi - says three learners from Shadrack Zibi Secondary School in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality could not write their Maths Literacy Paper 2, as the road leading to school was flooded.

He adds that at Moreri Secondary School, Tseoge Village, 19 learners wrote their Life Science paper late and could not finish it.

He says the matter has since been referred to the National Department of Basic Education and Umalusi for guidance.

Malindi reiterated that the department is pleased with following the completion of the exams despite these minor setbacks.

“On behalf of the department I am thankful that we have completed this important function under very difficult conditions. This was a daunting exercise but through collective efforts we made it through. I take this time to convey my extreme gratitude to the learners, educators, parents, officials, unions, school governing bodies and all stakeholders who contributed to the smooth completion of the examinations. The learners who were held back by floods from Shadrack Zibi Secondary school rewrote their Maths Literacy Paper 2 on Thursday, 8 December 2022,” he adds.

Meanwhile, MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, stated that scripts for different subjects have already been delivered across the province to 21 marking centres. She said that markers have already begun with their training on Friday, 9 December 2022, at the venues and the marking of scripts started today. Motsumi added the department expects all marking venues to be vacated by Thursday, 22 December 2022 as all scripts are expected to have been marked by then.

“I am very confident that our learners will make the entire province proud when the Minister of Basic Education releases the results next year,” Motsumi concluded.
