A Mangaung pressure group has distanced itself from violent acts which erupted in Phahameng on Sunday afternoon, following the death of a tavern owner who was shot in the early morning hours.

Three foreign nationals, allegedly involved in the murder of Themba "Gold" Mothibi (45) at the By Hoek Lounge, were arrested on Sunday.

A group of people went on the rampage and allegedly destroyed food stalls of foreign nationals in the streets of Phahameng.

Monday morning there were reports of people thrown out of public transport, doing the rounds on social media platforms.

The Mangaung Concerned Community (MCC) leader, Themba Zweni, condemned the untimely and violent death of Mothibi, who was the treasurer and a founder of the MCC.

Zweni expressed his shock after what he termed an unfortunate turn of events. He further stated that the mere fact that the death of Mothibi was allegedly at the hands of a foreign national, further complicates matters and the anger displayed by the community is understandable. He called on residents to maintain calm in memory of Mothibi. He further stated that the MCC wouldn’t want its name to be used to further other people's agendas.

“The MCC has met with the local taxi association and in that meeting, it has been agreed that the issue of illegal foreigners needs to be attended to in a joint operation, which would involve Home Affairs, SAPS, the local taxi association, and the entire community of Manguang because we definitely have to deal with the issue of foreigners,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zweni said Mothibi’s death leaves a huge gap in their organisation and the community of Mangaung.

“This selfless community leader sacrificed all to advance the struggle for the dissolution of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipal Council and bring an end to the marginalisation of locals when it came to awarding business and employment opportunities. Mr Mothibi, an orator par excellence, entrepreneur and innovator, will be sorely missed by all of us at the MCC. His death will never be in vain and may his revolutionary soul rest in eternal peace,” he concluded.
