North West police arrest 59 people during shutdown─── 07:47 Tue, 21 Mar 2023
The North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management reported that 59 people were arrested for various offenses during Monday's national shutdown protest by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
MEC Sello Lehari says law enforcement officers will continue monitoring the situation until the end of the week. He commended the officers for ensuring there was little disruption.
According to departmental spokesperson, Alpheus Koonyaditse, the offenses were mainly in contravention of the National Road Traffic Act, as some protesters are accused of pelting passing vehicles with stones and blocking roads with debris and burning tyres.
The EFF's North West secretary, Papiki Babuile, says they had a successful day despite some of their members being arrested.
Babuile told OFM News that members in Mahikeng marched to Eskom offices to ensure the message was clear on the need to end load-shedding, while in other parts of the province they marched to municipal offices to demonstrate dissatisfaction with service delivery.
Babuile said that on Wednesday they will be at courts to ensure their members are released, and in return, they will open cases with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), as in several cases, "police officers provoked protesters and unnecessarily shot at them."
